In the Crossing Season
A triptych
Birches sing of God’s glory
Golden leaves raining
Columns white spread fingers
Toward skies of storm blue and grey:
The might and power of Him on display.
I press close, crowd in
Seeking fellowship like young trees do;
My gold and silver an offering –
Beauty broken like an alabaster jar,
Costly steps upon a long and winding road.
This is what I know:
In sun-rays through singing branches
A revealing of a heart tempered
Through autumnal fire and travailing tears
Somehow,
Still,
As light and bold as a magpie wing
Soaring.
Author’s Note:
I’ve been teaching some of my art students about visual communication these last several weeks and it got the braincells itchin’ and twitchin’. Usually, one mode of delivery has primacy: either the art is at the forefront, or the text is. I wondered… what would happen if they were combined in a way that they were both intrinsic to the whole? I enjoyed the experiment. Perhaps I’ll do more diptychs and triptychs in the future!

I like this format, Heather! And I’m very fond of yellow leaves, so seeing your artwork makes me happy!
