The Last of the Light
Winds shiver and change
Seeping into every footfall
Wan light trembling through:
Let me bask for a moment more
Among autumnal flames
Soak the warmth in
Before winter dark steals it away.

Author’s Note:
What’s been on your mind lately?
Normally, I don’t particularly look forward to winter months (except for Advent!) because it cramps down on my outdoor time, but this year, I feel the call to stillness more than ever. Do you find the same? Lately I find myself sitting on my front porch, just listening to the rustle of leaves falling. Or watching bold magpies chase each other from ever-more-bare-than-yesterday branches. Pondering the burble of the little creek nearby as it passes over rocks and through undergrowth.
I beg God for just a few more nice days, but I secretly, simultaneously, look toward the cold days when I’ll curl up after dinner in the living room chair with my favorite blanket, a cup of tea, and my oil pastel set to quietly play the dark time away. I am not a sapling preparing for dormancy, but there is a kinship in there that I feel deep in my bones as mornings fill with fog and damp skies hover overhead.
I never considered this slow time a gift, before. This year though, I believe it is.
